Odd Interactions

A design research practice exploring Odd Interactions with technology that reveal a specific benefit of designing beyond the touchscreen. This is my PhD topic, which I am developing together with Prof. Kathrin Probst (FH Oberösterreich) and Prof. Astrid Weiss (TU Wien).

It is aimed at expanding the design space by exploring many possible directions rather than seeking a single solution. The examples of artifacts it generates serve as exercises for designers to prototype their ideas and for others to experience them.

These interactions may include unconventional inputs and outputs, body parts, sensory experiences, reflections, or critiques of technology. The artifacts through which we explore these interactions fall within three areas: artistic artifacts, research artifacts, and workshop artifacts.

Odd interactions is not a just another design strategy, but rather a way of thinking, a goal to pursue, and an alternative vision of reality. The unique contribution of Odd Interactions lies in expanding interaction beyond touchscreen gestures in order to: 1) explore, reflect on, and discuss values other than efficiency and ease of use, 2) break the sameness of current technological interfaces, and 3) make better use of the whole body and its abilities.

The impact of developing the Odd Interactions practice provides benefits to the broader field of interaction design. We imagine Odd Interactions as an ideation practice and ultimately aim for it to be used while starting the development of future technological devices and technology, resulting in richer, more playful and immersive, and often more inclusive and diverse interaction possibilities.

This project is still in development. To stay informed about our progress, follow the Odd Interactions Instagram channel.
